Trade Routes Disrupted as Bandit Activity Increases Across Provinces

Merchants report significant increase in robberies along major trade routes; royal authorities struggling to maintain security.

Security incidents along the Royal Road are now altering route economics, not just traveler confidence. Merchant houses report that previously routine legs between Babylon and Shushan now require larger escorts, longer staging windows, and higher insurance premiums.

Caravan managers in Media and Elam said convoy frequency has dropped while average load value per convoy has increased, a common risk response intended to reduce exposure events. The downside is clear: fewer departures create bottlenecks at storage depots and delay taxable trade turnover.

"We lost three caravans in one month and changed our model overnight," one senior guild officer said. "Now we move less often, with heavier guards, and pass the cost forward."

Provincial authorities have adjusted patrol schedules on major segments, but coverage remains uneven on feeder roads where attacks are increasingly concentrated. In practical terms, core corridors are defended while the roads that feed them are leaking risk.

Treasury officials monitoring customs volume have warned that sustained disruption could compress quarterly revenue even if nominal tariff rates remain unchanged. In this environment, security spending and revenue preservation are no longer separate policy tracks; they are the same operational problem.
